AUBURN: Alabama is going to the Southeastern Conference championship after the Crimson Tide earned a 27 to 20 victory Saturday evening against Auburn in the Iron Bowl.
Ty Simpson found Isiah Horton open for a 6 yard touchdown with 3:50 remaining in the 4th to send the Tide back on top after Auburn had tied the contest early in the final stanza,
Alabama was sharp early in this battle in getting a 17 to 0 lead on two passing scores by Simpson to Horton.
Auburn managed to kick a pair of field goals in the 2nd and cut the lead to 17 to 6 by halftime.
The Tigers scored on a 64 yard Ashton Daniels pass to Malcolm Simmons on the first series of the 3rd and were back in contention at 17 to 13.
Auburn made it a 20 to 20 game in the 4th on a Jeremiah Cobb run from the 2 that capped off a scoring drive of 88 yards in 6 plays.
Alabama was able to show poise in moving the ball 75 yards in 15 plays with Simpson finishing the night completing 19 passes for 122 yards and three touchdowns to Horton.
Daniels finished with 259 yards passing and a touchdown and produced 108 yards rushing for the Tigers.
We put ourselves in position to go win,” Auburn interim coach CJ Durkin said. “Critical mistakes – turnovers and penalties – cost us. You’ve got to take care of the football better than we did.”
Alabama is 10 & 2 and finish 7 & 1 in the SEC.
They share the same conference record with Georgia, Texas A&M and Ole Miss.
Based on a victory head to head with Georgia and strength of schedule, the Tide will play Georgia for the SEC championship in Atlanta on December 6 at 3:00 p.m. CST.
Auburn finishes 5 & 7, only 1 & 7 in the SEC standings.
The Tigers now look to see about their future in either promoting Durkin from interim to permanent head coach or bringing in someone new.
