GDW Analysis:
Cullman softball played at home for the first time Wednesday and continued its solid start with new coach Drew Bryson.
The Lady Bearcats romped over Bob Jones 13 to 3 thanks to 3 extra base hits that accounted for 10 runs batted in.
Cullman is 5 & 0 a week into the 2026 schedule.
The Lady 'Cats claimed an 18 to 7 victory at Arab Tuesday evening prior to enjoying the opportunity of taking to their home diamond that is made out of field turf.
A 2 run double by Samantha Johnson in the 1st brought in Abby Maples who led off with a single and Hattie Graham drawing a walk.
Johnson scored on a ground off from Reese Hopper and the momentum was on display for Cullman one inning into the game.
Sophomore Dracen Bates was given the chance to pitch the home opener.
Bates was solid in the early innings as she got help from her teammates with a 5 run 2nd.
Maples delivered a single scoring Leighton McGriff to send the lead to 5 to 0.
Graham was hit by a pitch and a fielders choice from Johnson loaded the bases for Cullman with one out.
Hopper then went deep into right field for a grand slam and it was 8 to 0 when the inning ended.
Cullman collected a double in the 3rd by Haylee Little but failed to add to its side of the scoreboard.
In the Bob Jones' 4th, the Lady Patriots had their best opportunity at the time to erase the 0 off their side of the scoreboard.
A pair of single and a walk had Bates very concerned with 2 outs. A pop out to 2nd ended the threat with Cullman taking its 8 to 0 lead into the last of the 4th.
Bates helped herself at the plate by a run scoring single to bring in Johnson and it was 9 to 0.
With the bases loaded, McGriff crushed one over the left field fence for the 2nd grand slam of the game.
Cullman led 13 to 0 needing 3 outs in the 5th to claim victory.
A leadoff double by Bob Jones, a ground out and a single ended Bates' bid for a shutout.
A line shot over center by Johnson cut the lead to 13 to 3.
Bates then hit two batters in a row as another run from the visitors out of Madison would take the game into the bottom of the 5th.
Bates recovered as a fly ball to left ended the home opener at 5:57 p.m. The game was played in 1 hour, 27 minutes.
Hopper and McGriff accounted for 4 RBIs on their grand slams, Johnson had 2, Maples one and Bates one run batted in.
Cullman is playing at Bill Noble Field in Gardendale Friday. The Lady 'Cats play St. Clair County at 3:30 p.m. and Ramsay at 5:00 p.m.
Bryson's Lady 'Cats return to the Cullman diamond on March 5 vs. the Brewer Lady Patriots at 4:30 p.m.
