BOAZ: St. Bernard Prep volleyball coach Elicia Fallin is taking a different approach at the start of the summer playday schedule.
Fallin has her Lady Saints at Snead State Community College for a playday series and a clinic with the Snead State program.
Gameday Weekly made the visit to the ACCC school Thursday with St. Bernard involved in playday battles against Weaver, Refine Travel, Buckhorn 9 and JB Pennington High School.
Fallin had her varsity and junior varsity together with both going through game like conditions vs. opponents they have never faced before except Pennington and know very little about them too.
The playday hosted by Snead State coach Cristie Brothers with her ball club handling duties as officials, line judges, scorers and clock operators.
Among them waiting for her sophomore season is former West Point standout Liberty Shadix.
Shadix made great contributions in her freshman year with Snead reaching the conference semifinals before the campaign ended in nearby Albertville to Wallace State.
For Fallin and her Lady Saints, St. Bernard has Rafi Guevera and Ella Cron returning from the previous season.
Guevera will be counted on for senior leadership.
Others that were involved in the playday Thursday in getting analyzed by GDW were Carolina McBride, Norah Bissot, Katie Chamblee and Sarah Woods.
The setup by Snead was matches being played for approximately 40 minutes. Game times were set up 45 minutes between the opening match on two courts at 9:00 a.m.
St. Bernard ended the assignment playing Pennington at 2:15 p.m.
The team would board their bus and return back to campus, then journey again to the Boaz based college for a workout with the collegiate squad Friday.
Fallin told GDW she was pleased with the work ethic of her teams in the first week the AHSAA allows volleyball programs in July to function in playdays and team camps.
St. Bernard once again finds itself in Area 13 of Class 1A in the AHSAA. The Lady Saints match up with the Addison Lady Bulldogs and Meek Lady Tigers from Winston County.
The rival that thrives them to perform at a high level is with Cullman Christian School. Both are area opponents for the 2nd consecutive year.
St. Bernard will be at CCS on September 18. The other game to be at the Fazi Richard Athletic Center has not been set in the scheduling format.
