ADDISON: Playing a county rival during the postseason does a lot in the case of inspiring a team to reach ultimate victory.
The Addison Bulldogs got to experience that Thursday in facing the Lynn Bears in quarterfinal play of the AHSAA 1A baseball playoffs.
Addison played very well in the month of April with 10 wins against one loss.
To start the month of May, the Bulldogs toppled the Bears 12 to 1 and 11 to 6.
Addison, No. 3 in the final state 1A ranking, has 25 wins to the season against 9 losses.
Now the Bulldogs will face the winner of Hackleburg vs. South Lamar in the semifinal round next weekend. This series is to have a doubleheader Friday from South Lamar with Game 3, if needed, to be on Saturday.
Game 1 victory for Addison:
With the ball field loaded of fans for Addison and Lynn, Addison had a good first inning with 4 runs to take the lead.
Jaxson Williams singled home a couple of runs while a ground out to short from Carter Pratt was good for a run batted in.
The momentum was on the side of the Bulldogs after the first at 4 to 0.
Lynn made a threat in the 2nd by getting the bases loaded with a single and two walks.
Right hander Kiah Lake stayed calm under the Bears' threat and got a ground out to Tucker Thompson at short and the Bulldogs would remain ahead by 4 until they hit in the 3rd.
Williams got a sac fly to left scoring Stone Talley.
With a 5 to 0 advantage, Addison broke Game 1 open scoring 7 runs in its side of the 4th.
RBIs were courtesy of William Stewart, Lake, Williams and Pratt. Dathan Cleghorn and Jed Wilkins raced home on passed balls.
The Bulldogs went to the 5th ahead 12 to 1, needing three outs to put this game into the victory column.
Lake retired the side in order, getting a diving catch by Wilkins in center to end the contest at 3:36 p.m.
Game 1 was played in 1 hour, 42 minutes.
Addison was the visitor in Game 2 with the Bulldogs getting control and finishing the day with a sweep of a county rival that had earned sweeps of Covenant Christian and Hubbertville before the battle in the Elite 8.
The Bears end the 2025 schedule with 20 wins & 11 losses.
Addison controlled Winston County teams going 9 & 0 vs. others this season. The Bulldogs defeated Lynn 4 times, Winston County 3 and had 2 victories over nearby rival Meek.
According to information, Addison is in the semifinals for the first time since 1995.
This moment is special to many, including principal Micah Smothers.
Smothers earlier in the week announced he will retire at the end of the school year.
The baseball team is providing a percentage of memories Smothers will take with him later in this month.
