ATLANTA: A doubleheader Saturday for the Atlanta Braves turned out to be very good in completing a sweep against their rival, the Miami Marlins.
Game 1 was solid pitching by rookie right hander Hurston Waldrep in a 7 to 1 victory.
Waldrep, back on the mound six days after a good outing in the MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol Motor Speedway, had 6 innings of allowing one run on 4 hits and 6 strikeouts.
The bullpen of Johnson, Lee and Kinsley silenced the Marlins the final three innings for 0 runs, 1 hit and a strikeout.
Michael Harris II blasted a three run homer in the 7th for insurance scoring and Drake Baldwin tallied a pair of base hits that accounted for two runs batted in.
The nightcap was a good time in overcoming a 4 to 0 deficit through the 4th, winning by the final of 8 to 6.
Marcel Ozuna went deep in consecutive innings. A solo homer got the Braves on the board in the 4th.
His three run shot in the 5th moved them ahead to stay.
Baldwin remained hot with a run scoring single in the 4th and a two run base hit during the 6th to make it 8 to 4 at that point.
Miami managed to cut the lead to 8 to 6 in the 7th, then the Braves had Cox to throw a scoreless 8th with 2 strikeouts and Rasiel Iglesias come in the 9th and earn his 16th save.
The Braves have prevailed in three of four games with the Marlins. The doubleheader Saturday was due to a game early in the season at Truist Park being postponed by rain.
The Braves have 50 wins on the season in defeating a team that is currently ahead of them in the standings in the NL East.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Braves hope to maintain momentum when the finale is Sunday at 12:35 p.m. CST.
The game will be live on WKUL FM (92.1).
Next week the Braves head on the road to play three at the New York Mets and a weekend series with the Indians in Cleveland.
