WKUL.com (WKUL Sports Extra)
Series: West Point 25/19/1
2024: Good Hope defeated West Point 17 to 3.
West Point 1 & 0 (30 to 6 win over Haleyville)
Good Hope 0 & 0
Details:
West Point regained a winning identity in its opener in winning at Haleyville for the first time.
The Warriors never trailed in getting on the board first and having a 17 to 6 advantage at the half.
A TD was added in the 3rd quarter for breathing room with the Warriors up 24 to 6.
West Point tacked on a score in the final stanza to close out a fine outing in the start of the 2nd year under coach Kevin McCrary.
Good Hope played, but it was a jamboree game at Pisgah, the No. 2 team in Class 2A.
The Raiders were in the Pisgah end zone three times in the first half for a 21 to 6 lead enroute to a 24 to 12 triumph.
New QBs will step into the spotlight in this one.
West Point will go with Ayden Ennis while Good Hope has a healthy Parker Johnson.
Johnson suffered an injury in this game a year ago.
Johnson is left handed and can challenge defenses with his ability to run or throw the football out of the spread formation for coach Alan Scott.
Running the ball will be a main topic. West Point will use the speed and strength of Ollie Howell. Howell scored 2 TDs against Haleyville and stood out the week before in a jamboree with Hanceville by a 55 yard to the Bulldogs' 15 on the first play of the game.
Good Hope will seek solid play in the ground attack from Mason Drake.
Drake set a tone in a spring game with Fyffe for rushing for 42 yards in one half of football and scoring from 16 yards out for the lone TD as the Raiders won 6 to 0.
This series in recent time has been controlled by the visitor.
Last year, the game was even at 3 to 3 at the half when Good Hope scored on 2 second half drives of 65 and 60 yards to claim a 17 to 3 decision.
In 2023 on a very humid Friday evening, the Warriors pulled off a sensational comeback at Good Hope when they wiped out a 20 to 0 deficit in the first and would go to score a 49 to 32 victory.
This is the highest point tally for the two combined in 45 years they have stood toe to toe vs. each other.
The value of the game does have a high status with the Warriors and Raiders to use it as a build up to the start of regional play the first Friday in September.
West Point gets Fairview to visit West Point Stadium September 5 in a 5A, Region 7 battle.
Good Hope has a trip that evening to Fultondale for the opener in 4A, Region 5.
