BRISTOL, Tennessee: Two not well known Atlanta Braves gave out a good outing Sunday with the Braves claiming a 4 to 2 triumph against the Cincinnati Reds in the inaugural "Speedway Classic" from Bristol Motor Speedway.
Right fielder Eli White, batting 8th in the lineup, blasted a 3 run homer in the 2nd to put the Braves ahead to stay.
He then went deep in the 7th as White in his first year with the Braves, has hit 6 home runs and accounted for all the runs driven in.
Hurston Waldrep was given the ball Sunday when the game resumed after getting suspended Saturday evening by rain.
Waldrep worked 5 and two third innings, allowed the Reds 1 run on 3 hits and had 4 strikeouts. He earned his first Major League victory and has a 1.59 ERA.
The Braves concluded a road tour that started July 24 with three in Texas, three games then in Kansas City, two at Cincinnati before this special event held at the fastest track on the NASCAR circuit.
Ben Ingram of the Braves Radio Network announced during the broadcast that was heard on 92.1 FM, a major league record crowd of 91,032, enjoyed their time with the great festivities Saturday before the rain spoiled the fun and to get the game done in 2 hours, 41 minutes on Sunday.
Now the Braves take home the Speedway Classic trophy and will be at Truist Park all week.
The Brewers come to Atlanta Monday through Wednesday. Then the Marlins who are a hot ball club after sweeping the New York Yankees over the weekend, battle the Braves for 4 with the opener on Thursday.
Braves baseball is available to tune in regularly on WKUL FM (92.1).
