GDW Analysis:
WEST POINT: Seven years of coaching AHSAA baseball at West Point High School, Drew Bryson has decided to change his culture.
Bryson has accepted the position to coach softball at Cullman High School.
This was approved by the Cullman City School board Wednesday.
Bryson played baseball at Cullman High School before he would go on to perform for Randy Putman at Wallace State Community College and then the University of West Florida.
Bryson took the Warriors to the AHSAA Class 5A playoffs for three consecutive seasons.
The Warriors were also the best in Cullman County baseball, winning the championship under his command from 2019 to 2024.
Their run ended when Fairview defeated the Warriors 3 to 2 in the county title game March 22 at Good Hope High School.
Bryson has been involved in softball through an organization called the Birmingham Mustangs.
The Mustangs play in the United States Sports Specialties Association (USSSA) in which he has been coaching his two daughtes.
In 2024, the Mustangs accomplished a great feat of 100 victories in one season as they performed in numerous USSSA events throughout the Southeast.
Gameday Weekly was aware of Cullman taking interest in Bryson when he was seen by GDW a couple of times during the 2025 Lady Bearcat season.
Bryson will follow Jessica McBrayer who was in charge of the program for one year.
Cullman was a young squad for 2025, especially in its pitching staff with sophomore Kynlei Storey and freshman Dracen Bates the mainstay as they were seen several times by Gameday Weekly.
Young talent for the Lady 'Cats consists of catcher Abby Maples, just finishing the 8th grade, 2nd baseman Hattie Graham who will go into her junior season in 2026, senior to be Reese Hopper in right field.
Freshman to be catcher Samantha Johnson played a lot in the recent campaign.
It will be the opportunity of a coach that understands the game to blend his leadership with the personnel and for Cullman to move upward after a 2025 season produced very few victories.
Bryson's first season with Cullman softball will have the Lady 'Cats in 6A, Area 13 with Mortimer Jordan and Jasper.
Cullman played West Point with both schools working to keep the series going into next year and the future.
Other schools the Lady 'Cats hope to remain battling on the diamond include Hartselle, Hayden, West Morgan, Brewer, Curry Arab.
Bryson may want to get in touch with Tim Tucker of Good Hope and set up a series with the best team from the Cullman County system.
With Bryson now leading Cullman softball, the Lady 'Cats have impact people coaching female sports at the 6A school.
Tammy West is now in charge of Lady 'Cats basketball while Amy Hudson will be in her 2nd year with volleyball after she built credibility for several years coaching at Arab High School.
