GDW Analysis:
An idea of creating a facility to upgrade park and recreation activity in the city of Cullman was laid out in the planning process 10 years ago.
Now the city is overwhelmed for the new structure named the Omniplex on the purpose it has to provide for so many along what it can do for the city in financial profit.
A ribbon cutting ceremony took place Friday morning outside the Omniplex.
The facility is adjacent to the Cullman Aquatics and Wellness Center, the Field of Miracles and the Donald Green Center, formerly known as Ingle Park.
From the work of the Cullman City council, the Cullman Parks and Recreation board and others, the Omniplex stands alone in being a spacious area.
For the weekend, activity in various sports is available free of charge.
Gameday Weekly got a glimpse of seeing a variety of sporting events going on inside the Omniplex prior to the official ceremony.
Basketball, volleyball, pickleball, fotball, spikeball, frisbee throwing and a cornhole tournament signified the balance of athletic competition from the young to the young at heart.
The ceremony was coordinated by Cullman City Parks and Recreation Director Nathan Anderson.
Anderson reported of the Omniplex already having a series of basketball events from Hoop Seen, Nike EYBL, Adidas and others in the waiting.
The Nike EYBL Classic in April had a record number of travel basketball teams with 110 participating in numerous age divisions with teams traveling to Cullman from locations throughout the Southeast.
Already this week, a Nike basketball camp was on hand for four days with 40 participants active from age 7 to 17.
The camp was directed by Markel Leonard, a scout for the Los Angeles Sparks from the WNBA.
Blockout Academy with coach Nev had volleyball going Friday morning.
An art camp was coming to its conclusion while Camp Cullman had been another organization delighted to enjoy the atmosphere presented by the Omniplex.
The Omniplex operates under regular business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.
