HANCEVILLE: One hundred years of playing AHSAA football will be celebrated by Hanceville High School this year.
The 3A school is the oldest of the teams in the Cullman County system, getting started back in 1925.
On Saturday afternoon, "Meet the Bulldogs" was held to signify this special moment for the school and the community.
Hanceville shares the 100th anniversary of the sport with Hackleburg, JU Blacksher, Valley Head and Wadley as they started in 1925.
Schools nearby that have been playing football a little longer than Hanceville include JB Pennington in 1908, Cullman in 1915, Arab in 1922, Falkville in 1924, Meek in 1924.
The 2025 Bulldogs were recognized by public address announcer David Miller.
Also earning their time to be in the spotlight were the volleyball and cheerleading teams from the youth to the middle school, junior varsity and varsity.
Second year coach Levi Estes got the Bulldogs into a workout as the temperature from Ray Talley Stadium was in the mid 80s with a heat index of near 90.
The Bulldogs will get a jamboree at Hanceville next Friday vs. the West Point Warriors.
Hanceville travels to Cold Springs for the season opener on Thursday, August 21.
That will be followed by a matchup from Hanceville against Holly Pond the 29th.
Bulldogs history:
Hanceville has compiled 452 victories all time on the gridiron against 439 losses and 25 ties.
Playing at home, the all time Bulldog record is 178/162/8.
Two good decades for the Bulldogs were in the 1970s and 1980s.
Hanceville was 68/33/2 between 1970 to 1979.
A record of 78 & 38 was achieved by the team in the 1980s.
Ray Talley stand above as the winningest Bulldog coach, 117 wins over 52 losses between 1976 to 1990.
Mark Smothers ranks 2nd with 46 wins from 1995 to 2002.
Danny Miller anchored the squad with it winning 39 games from 2009 to 2015.
Keith Burns followed Talley with the Bulldogs grabbing 22 victories from 1991 to 1994.
John Meadows had a great brief career at Hanceville, a total of 17 wins, 2 losses and a tie from 1955 to 1956. Talley was the Bulldogs' starting QB.
All five of these coaches with Hanceville credentials are in the Cullman County Hall of Fame.
Talley was a part of the inaugural inducted in the HoF in 2000.
The 117 victories from Talley's run has the legend 3rd in the history of local football at one school.
Mark Britton accounted for 137 wins while coaching Cullman between 2001 to 2017.
George Redding of Fairview is currently 2nd as he enters the 2025 season at 127 victories against 70 losses.
After Talley, it's Billy Joe Pugh of Good Hope at 86, Mark Smothers of Vinemont 73, Rod Elliott of Cold Springs 60, Don Farley of West Point 54 and Billy Oliver at Holly Pond with 44.
