MONTGOMERY: Nothing was earned by either the North or the South through three periods of the 29th AHSAA girls basketball all star game Tuesday evening from the Cramton Bowl Multiplex.
In the final 8:00, the South stormed by the North 30 to 20 on the scoreboard and stunned the North squad 85 to 75.
This stopped a 7 game winning streak by the North with the South only winning the classic for the 4th time ever and their first since 2016.
Gameday Weekly's top two point guards from last season, Reagan Robinson of Vinemont and Jaelyn Faulkner of West Point were part of a talented group of North all stars.
Both entered the game to start the 2nd period. The North was ahead 10 to 0 early to begin it thanks to 2 treys by Lani Smallwood of Albertville, formerly of Susan Moore. But the South rallied and went ahead 18 to 17 when time ran out in the first.
Robinson made a great play in the 2nd when she caught a pass from Smallwood and hit a layup to make it North 23 to 20.
A problem for the North was containing a superb three point attack by the South, featuring a pair of twin sisters. Mari-Margaret Grayson and Madi-Marie Grayson from St. Paul's in Mobile.
Mari Margaret bombed a three from near halfcourt as the half ended to put the South ahead 39 to 38.
The South converted 60 percent from shooting the three in the first half, six of 10.
Robinson and Faulkner were given the nod by North coach Capri Tucker to start the 3rd. Robinson hit a driving FG as the North went back in front 40 to 39.
Faulkner produced a score late in the stanza with the two swapping the lead on the scoreboard numerous times.
The game went into the 4th tied at 55 to 55 by a short range North jumper from Khloe Ford.
The last time the North led was at 61 to 59 early in the 4th on a three by Adrienne Hunt of Paul Bryant High School.
Team South would get the outside shot going down the stretch as they prevailed with a 30 to 20 tally in the final 8:00 for the victory.
Good numbers came from the South attack, making 34 of 66 FGs, 11 of 19 from downtown. They were only 6 of 15 at the line.
The North had a respectable 50 percent for the contest, 28 of 56. The North knocked down 10 of 22 treys and 9 of 14 in FTs.
Smallwood got the MVP award for the North with a game high 22 points, 8 of 11 FGs and 6 of 9 in shooting the three.
Malyah Meeks of 6A state champion Park Crossing earned the South MVP. Meeks netted 16 points on 7 of 13 shooting, 11 rebounds.
Robinson and Faulkner received support from their coaches, players and family members.
For Robinson, Vinemont coach Emily Willoughby was among a very good crowd to see the game as well as her assistant, Paige Collett.
John Welborn of West Point made the trip to watch Faulkner play as did the varsity coach of West Point, Mason Voce.
College coaches were around the arena too, including conference champion coach Joseph Simmons of Wallace State.
