SUMITON: Walker County will have one school without AHSAA football for the next two years.
Sumiton Christian School has reported the program will drop to junior varsity play for 2025/26 and 2026/27.
Low numbers is the reason Sumiton Christian made this decision.
Sumiton had 7 seniors to graduate from the 2024 squad that consisted of 20 total players.
The school has been playing AHSAA football since 2000. The last two years has been tough for the Eagles with a combined record of 1 win and 19 losses.
Head coach Jarius Williams submitted his resignation that was accepted by the school on Monday.
Assistant coach Steven Sides has been named the interim coach.
Sumiton Christian is planning to play approximately six to possibly nine games in 2025 against junior varsity opposition.
The Eagles have scheduled a JV game on August 29 vs. Victory Christian School.
Sumiton Christian has played 5 schools from the Cullman County system all time.
The Eagles have an all time record of 2 & 4 vs. Cold Springs, 0 & 2 vs. Good Hope, 2 & 2 vs. Hanceville, 2 & 0 vs. Holly Pond, 2 & 0 vs. Vinemont. That's 8 wins all time vs. 8 losses.
Hanceville and Sumiton Christian played on opening night of the 2019 season. Hanceville won at Sumiton 32 to 26 in OT.
That season the Eagles met the Cold Springs and fell by the score of 50 to 12.
Sumiton was sanctioned by the AHSAA as a 1A program. playing in Region 5. The Eagles' regional opponents were Berry, Brilliant, Hubbertville, Lynn, Marion Co, Pickens Co, South Lamar.
