GDW Analysis:
James Brown's debut as Vinemont Eagles basketball coach Monday will be remembered for a few days until they deal with their next assignment.
Vinemont showed poise late in the contest when East Lawrence trimmed a 10 point deficit down to one point at 54 to 53.
Field goals by Gee Flores, Bryson Bush and Sam Marsh in the final minute rescued Vinemont with a good crowd in attendance to see Brown's debut with the varsity.
Bush would scored 9 of his 13 points in the 4th, Flores finished with 10, Colton Gillis got 10, Marsh had 5, Cheston Wilhite 8.
Tad Terry was hot for East Lawrence with 9 of his 18 in the final period, scoring three FGs, a trey and 2 FTs to set the visitors pace for a possible comeback.
Jay Davis and Chantler Bolding added 8 apiece for the visitors from the Caddo area of Lawrence County.
Victory eludes the Vinemont Lady Eagles:
A good start in the first enabled the Lady Eagles to take a 12 to 5 lead before East Lawrence charged back.
It was 15 to 12 for Vinemont when the period ended. Then Emily Willoughby's Lady Eagles went through a rough 2nd period, getting outscored by East Lawrence 14 to 4 and trailed at the half 25 to 19.
Vinemont would go through a series of getting behind and then coming back to be in striking range of the visiting Lady Eagles before they opportunity to win on opening night in Willoughby's 2nd season at Vinemont was denied.
Down 48 to 45 on a FG by Vayda Yarbrough, Vinemont surrendered East Lawrence 7 consecutive points and were behind 58 to 48 late in the period.
After shooting 3 of 10 from the FT line in the 1st, East Lawrence adjusted and 11 of 16 the rest of the game. They went 6 of 6 in the 3rd and sealed it with a pair at the line in the final 2 seconds.
Freshman G Kennedy Kilpatrick led East Lawrence in the upset with 20, scoring 13 in the final half.
Senior center Jazzlyn Stephenson netted 17, with 9 in the last half.
Vinemont did get good balance scoring as Caroline Miller had 16, Reagan Robinson 15 and Yarbrough 12.
But a strength of the Lady Eagles, 3 point shooting, was off target on Monday night.
Vinemont got one when Miller tallied it to end the first and put them up 15 to 11.
The Lady Eagles had their moments from the line with 10 being made out of 12 tries in the last half.
They struggled in the first 16:00 from the stripe at 2 of 8, missing all four attempts in a low scoring 2nd period.
